A message from Bruce Gutgesell, President of the
Washington Music Educators Association.
Thanks to all of you who attended this years event in
Yakima. These performances serve as a most fitting celebration of years of hard work
by our students who have been selected for the honor of representing their schools.
It is also an integral part of our WMEA biennial conference, where music educators across
the state have gathered in an educational setting to learn and grow as
professionals. All-State groups have been a part of our conferences since
1948. Though many things will undoubtedly change as we head into the new millenium,
I am confident that this event will continue as a showcase for our young musicians.
As you can imagine, an event of this magnitude involves an incredible
amount of work by a solid core of dedicated individuals. these teachers generously
devote hours upon hours of work on behalf of the students you see before you. our
organization and those we serve would be nothing without the unselfish volunteerism they
provide.
Experiences like these can shape our futures. I had the great
fortune of participating in All-State groups when I was in high school. I can still
remember every composition we performed and each of my conductors as if I were there
today. it was during that time that I decided that a career in music, as a performer
or teacher, was the right path for me. Those of you in this year's All-State groups
now face similar career decisions. While I know that the skill, dedication, work
ethic and talent that has earned you this honor tells us you will be successful in
whatever field you choose, I hope you will seriously consider teaching among your many
choices. We need the best, brightest and most creative people in our schools, and
you are certainly all those things.
A common thread among all of us in the audience, whether family, friend
or teacher, is the incredible sense of pride for the accomplishments of these young
people.. Music has certainly had a tremendously positive impact in their lives and on all
of us who have shared in their successes. Help Us keep opportunities like this alive
and thriving for our students. Tell a school official, a friend or neighbor what you
witnessed and how music has affected your family's life.
